About style

Here is a poem of Charles Bukowski, this is what describes style the best for me and shows how it isn't about fashion at all, fashion is just for shaking style up and it helps to make it visible.

Style - Charles Bukowski

Style is the answer to everything.
A fresh way to approach a dull or dangerous thing
To do a dull thing with style is preferable to doing a dangerous thing without it
To do a dangerous thing with style is what I call art

Bullfighting can be an art
Boxing can be an art
Loving can be an art
Opening a can of sardines can be an art

Not many have style
Not many can keep style
I have seen dogs with more style than men,
although not many dogs have style.
Cats have it with abundance.

When Hemingway put his brains to the wall with a shotgun,
that was style.
Or sometimes people give you style
Joan of Arc had style
John the Baptist
Jesus
Socrates
Caesar
García Lorca.

I have met men in jail with style.
I have met more men in jail with style than men out of jail.
Style is the difference, a way of doing, a way of being done.
Six herons standing quietly in a pool of water,
or you, naked, walking out of the bathroom without seeing me.

Another good example is this ad of Prada's first fragrance which was released in 2004, and still shows us timeless style, I don't know it is because of the perfect Daria Werbowy, or the classy Prada outfits, or because it's a work of Jordan and Tony Scott, or the beautiful poem The Thunder, Perfect Mind (it is a short version, which you can also read below), okay maybe that is because all these encountered.

Thunder Perfect Mind (short version)

For I am the first and the last
I am the wife and the virgin,
I am the mother and the daughter
I'm she whose wedding is great,
And I have not taken a husband
I am the bride and the bride groom
I am senseless and I am wise.
Come forward to childhood
And do not despise it
Because of a small knows little,
And do not turn away greatnesses
And some parts for smallnesses ,
For the smallnesses are known from their greatnesses
I am the one who is honoured and who is praised
I am knowledge and ignorance
I am shame and boldness
I am shameless, I am ashamed
I am control and uncontrollable
I am strength and I am fear
I am war and peace
I am the substance and the one who has no substance
But I...
I am compassionate and I am cruel
Do not hate my obedience
And do not love my self-control
I am the union and the dissolution
I am she who exists in all fears
In strength and trembling
I am she who is weak and I am wild in a pleasant ways
And I'm an alien and a citizen
I am the silence that is incomprehensible
And the idea who is remembered as frequent
I am the voice whose sounds metaphored
For I am the first and the last

Stripes time

The good old stripes are back. Although I'm not quite sure it was ever out, at least not for me. I think there are a few essential items which are never get boring, because you can always wear them in a fresh way. For me it never was the little black dress, first of all because I always like different cuts, but I do think a simple black or cream trench coat is always a good investment (right now I would wear it as a dress) or a white shirt (at the moment probably a sheer one, a bit oversized) or a navy and white or black and white jumper (I like to wear mine with something glamorous like a sequinned or metallic skirt).
So here we are, the stripes (the best when the two colours have a big contrast and the lines are equally wide), and now you can wear it on trousers, t-shirts, shirts, or dresses. I like to combine them with each other or with dots or checks in the same pair of colours. And yes, dots and checks are also in.
Here are a few cool pics of Britt Maren wearing Nasty Gal outfits.

And H&M as well.

Happy Bowie-day!

Yes, today is David Bowie's 66th birthday. And this is a good opportunity to learn from his sense of style. He is a chameleon, and I love his elegant appearances as much as his glam rock outfits from the seventies.
Here are some images of him (and a few lucky bastards who could be on a picture with him).

His music influenced me a lot in so many ways, this is a very poor collection of my favourites, so cheers to him and his upcoming new album called The next day (you can find the first song of it Where Are We Now? below).

Oh and the most awesome blog "dedicated to the belief that Tilda (Swinton) and Bowie are one person" Tilda Stardust (I love Tilda as well, we'll talk about her later.)
